RECAPTURING TIME
Perhaps the best way to begin healing our relationship with time is to begin thinking about our natural rhythms. From the four seasons to the moon’s phases to our own heartbeats, there is an underlying pulse to life on Earth that is both comforting and beautiful. When we are children, we learn to think of the day and the night as dance partners, trading places each 24-hour period. The revolutions of the planets and the motion of the waves encircle us like a cosmic embrace. Most of us encounter music for the first time as kids, and the beat of the drum, tambourine, or bass delights us. Deep inside we feel connected to time.
In order to recapture the magic of living in tune with the rhythms of the universe, we have to stop defying time and start respecting it. A perfect gauge of this relationship is our breathing. If we are not breathing enough, or breathing shallowly, we can oftentimes find ourselves off the beat. As an exercise, try sitting down and just breathing naturally. You will find that your chest rises and falls to your own rhythm, without force. It is the song of you. When you hold your breath, whether out of dread, anxiety, or in order not to feel, you interrupt this music of life and cause yourself stress. Breathing in and out, normally and easily, will instantly ground you in your body, in your life, and in time.
The second thing to remember is that life is essentially a creative process. We create our own realities. We are not slaves to time; instead we have the ability to mold and shape our day according to the values we hold most dear. If we say that our priority is our children, but then we can never find the time to play with them, there is a discrepancy between our actions and the intentions in our heart. This imbalance causes pain, and the pain drives us back toward addiction. If our life’s goal is to write novels, yet we cannot find even 10 minutes a day to devote to our dream, we have a problem with time management.
Luckily, there are some excellent tools we can use to help redistribute our time and make sure the things we truly care about are receiving adequate representation in our day. These include time tracking, creating a time spending plan or pie chart, and the use of micro actions.
